The Calgary Police Service Fraud Unit is investigating an incident in which an elderly woman was defrauded of much of her life savings by an individual claiming to be a bank investigator.
On Thursday, Nov. 27, 2008, an 82-year-old Calgary woman was contacted at home by phone, and told that someone in her bank was stealing from her. The culprit asked the woman to help him trap the bank staff member involved in the alleged theft.
The culprit instructed the woman to go to her bank, remove $5,000 cash, and meet him on the sidewalk, a block away from the bank, to hand off the money. She was told this would help bank investigators trap the offending staff member, and that her money would be kept safe in another account.
After returning home from the first money delivery, the victim received two more phone calls instructing her to return to the bank on two separate occasions, to get additional cash and the contents of her safety deposit box to turn over to this same bank investigator.
In an effort to assist the bogus investigator, the woman walked 10 blocks from her home, to the bank, on three different occasions. She provided the bogus bank investigator with a large part of her life savings, including money, and gold coins, including a one ounce and a one-quarter ounce Canadian Maple Leaf gold coin, a one ounce and one-half ounce Krugerrands from South Africa, and nine Austrian Ducat coins valued at over $50,000. The approximately 108 gold coins were stored in a white canvas bag.
Throughout this process, the bogus bank investigator appeared rushed and talked about a covert operation to trap bank staff, involving surveillance cameras.
The police are seeking the public’s assistance in locating this culprit and recovering the elderly woman’s cash and coins.

The Calgary Police Service is investigating recent cases of vehicle fraud.
There have been at least two cases over the past two weeks where a culprit has contacted people who have advertised a vehicle for sale, usually in a classified ad publication.
In each case, the suspect offered to purchase the vehicle and went to the seller’s home in order to pay for and pick up the vehicle. The suspect arrived at the seller’s home in the evening, after banking hours, with a friend. The pair stated that they were from out of town.
The suspect paid for the vehicle with a bank draft, leaving the seller’s home with the vehicle. In these recent cases, the bank drafts have been fraudulent, and the sellers left without their vehicle. Many insurance policies do not cover this type of offence.
