Police are investigating numerous incidents of ATM skimming. In November 2007, police charged three individuals as part of a debit card skimming operation at various locations in Calgary. The men were believed to be involved in an Eastern European organized crime group, based out of Montreal, QB. One of the methods used was to install mini-cameras and skimming equipment at ATM machines. The men allegedly obtained card data from hundreds of Calgarians, using this information to defraud banks of more than $250,000. Tips from the public, as well as assistance from the RCMP, led to the identification and arrest of the three men. Investigators now believe that another group has been targeting Calgary ATMs over the last two months, using the same method. Police are investigating whether cases in January and February 2008, are related to previous incidents. Using cameras installed inside the hood covering ATM keypads, as well as skimming devices attached on top of the card slot, the suspects have been able to capture data from cards as they are inserted into the machines. To date, banking authorities have informed investigators that more than 25 ATM sites have been affected by these latest incidents, with at least 50 debit cards being compromised, with a loss in excess of $50,000. Many of these incidents have occurred during evenings and weekends, when the adjacent banks are closed. Organized crime fraud investigators with the CPS Commercial Crime Unit are seeking public assistance in identifying and locating two men believed responsible for these latest incidents. The first suspect is described as Caucasian, possibly with an Eastern European background, 35-years-old, unshaven, with a medium height and build. The second suspect is described as Caucasian, possibly with an Eastern European background, 35-years-old, with a thin build and medium height. These culprits may be using an older-model, white, two-door car. Members of the public are requested to contact police immediately at 266-1234 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477), should they recognize these suspects.
